First HaloFarMs Workshop “SOIL BIOREMEDIATION & WATER DESALINATION”

Soil conservation and sustainable management of water resources are at the heart of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations. Treatment of unconventional waters including wastewater reclamation, brackish and seawater desalination would be great potentials to supply water in Mediterranean countries. Soil bioremediation using microorganisms and plants is an effective process to reduce salinity and remove pollutants from soils, transforming contaminated areas to productive soils. Aiming at developing these natural based solutions in the Mediterranean saline soils, the Tunisian Centers of Biotechnology of Borj Cedria (CBBC) and Water Research and Technologies (CERTE), the Desert Research Center (DRC) from Egypt, the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), the University of Occidental Brittany (UBO) and the National Institute of Research for Agriculture, Food and Environment (INRAE) from France, the University of Pisa (UNIPI) from Italy, the Center of Marine Sciences (CCMAR) from Portugal, are collaborating within the PRIMA project “HaloFarMs” (2020-2023) entitled “Development and optimization of halophyte-based farming systems in salt-affected Mediterranean soils”. This Project is financed by PRIMA , Partnership for Research and Innovation Program supported by the European Union.

In the framework of this project, the CBBC and CERTE organized a first workshop on “Soil bioremediation and water desalination”. The main objective of the workshop is to share the existing knowledge and experiences in the Mediterranean area from the academia, the scientists, the private sector associations and governments, on the innovative approaches for soil remediation and water purification, focusing mainly on salinity.

In light of COVID-19 pandemic, this first HaloFarMs workshop will be held online from 25 to 26 November 2021 (https://event.fourwaves.com/firsthalofarmsworkshop). 15 keynote presentations will be given by invited leading experts in the field of soil remediation and water desalination. Parallel electronic Poster sessions will be organized for both themes (i) Soil bioremediation and (ii) water desalination.
